A founder who wanted to run her business, not a technical project.
Emma Coustures had neither a technical team nor the desire to build one. She had a vision: to create Coliope, a French peer-to-peer object rental marketplace that was accessible and polished. The challenge she refused to take on was becoming a full-time IT project manager.
Most marketplace founders fall into this trap: they choose a patchwork of SaaS tools (Shopify + Stripe Connect + DocuSign + HubSpot + Mailchimp + Pennylane + …), sign 8 contracts, juggle as many support teams, and spend their first six months making tools talk to each other instead of talking to their customers.
Emma wanted the opposite: a single partner that delivers, supports and follows up. Not to save money — to stay focused on what matters: her business, her renters, her users, her strategy.
A marketplace is first and foremost a business vision. Only then, a tool.
A successful marketplace isn’t just a website with a cart. It’s a commercial ecosystem where every detail has outsized importance.
How to position Coliope in an already crowded rental market? What experience for lenders (who need to want to list) AND for customers (who need to want to rent)? What unique value proposition: trust, local focus, service, price? What commission model? What booking process? How to manage security deposits? What recourse in case of disputes?
These questions can’t be solved in a configuration wizard. They need to be worked through in business workshops, with someone who has seen other marketplaces succeed and fail, who knows what to prioritise, and who can translate strategic choices into concrete user journeys.
The first thing we did with Emma was: define the business before writing a single line of code.
Four phases, one team. From scoping to scaling.
Everything running on Coliope today — without a single third-party SaaS subscription.
The marketplace isn’t a patchwork of Shopify + Stripe Connect + DocuSign + HubSpot + Mailchimp. It’s one cohesive platform, delivered and operated by Orizen. Here’s what’s actually built in—from payments to loyalty programmes, mapping to bulk imports.
Customer collection, automatic split between renter and platform, Coliope commission calculated per transaction. Native PSD2/SCA compliance.
Pre-authorisation on booking, automatic capture in case of dispute, release on return. Lenders are covered, hassle-free.
Real-time pricing (Colissimo, Chronopost, Mondial Relay…), PDF label generation, automatic tracking, pickup/drop-off options.
Invoices and credit notes compliant with French law (mentions, VAT, numbering), legal archiving, Pennylane export ready for the accountant.
10 business categories (furniture, tableware, sound, decor, games, venues…), rich product sheets, calendar availability, price/day, photos.
“Describe your need · AI finds the right objects” — intent routing that understands conversational queries and returns the most relevant listings.
Search by geographic perimeter (Toulouse and surroundings), List view / Map view, postcode + radius, nearby suggestions.
When a lender adds an item without a photo, the AI generates a consistent visual from the title and category. No more empty image slots in the catalogue.
A single card per contact, whether they rent or offer, transaction history, exchanges, reports. Emma sees the full ecosystem.
Automatic pre-filtering (text + image) on listings and messages, user reporting, moderation queue + lender appeal process.
Ratings & reviews after every rental, Review markup exposed to Google (rich star snippets), reputation by owner and by item.
Rental terms electronically signed before object handover (email OTP), archived envelopes, probative value.
Points earned with every rental, tiered rewards (discounts, free delivery, early access to premium items), customer dashboard.
Statuses like ‘Top Lender’, badges for ‘10 rentals’, ‘Reactivity ★★★’, visible to customers for reassurance and to lenders for engagement.
CSV import to onboard a pro renter with 100+ items at once, smart mapping, accounting export, GDPR backups.
Granular consent (cookies, AI, marketing), operational right to be forgotten, OVH France hosting, EU-only subcontractors.
16 modules delivered, a single platform, one partner. None of these blocks could have been assembled via third-party SaaS in under 6 months — and each would have required its own subscription, integrator, and support to call in case of bugs. Coliope comes with everything — and continues to evolve as part of the 1-year follow-up.
“The moment I knew we’d found the right partner wasn’t the delivery. It was the first quarterly review: we talked business, delivery options, payment processes, revenue models. No bugs to fix.”
A live marketplace, run by its founder.
Success isn’t measured in lines of code delivered, but in business freedom regained. Emma runs Coliope day-to-day, makes strategic decisions with full insight, and benefits from Orizen’s accumulated expertise on what works—and what doesn’t—when launching a marketplace.
And above all: Emma can, without getting technical, change course when the market demands it. That’s what real business support means — not just a well-delivered tool, but a partner that adapts the marketplace as the vision evolves.
“Before Orizen, I would have signed a €50k project with an agency, plus 8 SaaS subscriptions, plus an integrator budget. Six months of work. Today, I have Coliope in production, and I’ve kept my energy for the business.”
A tool is delivered. A business vision is shared over time.
The SaaS industry was built on a compelling promise: subscribe, configure it yourself, scale without us. This promise works for simple, low-unit-value products. It breaks down as soon as you need to build a truly complex business — like a marketplace.
On a marketplace, the key challenges aren’t technical. They’re business: positioning, acquisition, conversion, retention, lender loyalty, commission model, dispute management. No wizard solves these. Only a partner who’s seen the patterns, stands the test of time, and invests in your success can.
That’s why we structured Orizen as a tool + a team, not just a standard SaaS. The platform is delivered turnkey. The team supports you for 1 month of adjustments, then for at least 1 year on scaling, SEO and pivots. Beyond that, we keep going, because real businesses don’t stop after a year.
Coliope is our first demonstration of this model. If you have a business vision that deserves more than a patchwork of SaaS tools, we’d love to talk to you about it.
